This editorial examines the challenges that recent transformations in scientific publishing pose to research integrity. In particular, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), the rapid growth of mega-journals, and the manipulation of impact factors risk undermining core scientific principles such as objectivity, reproducibility, and transparency.

The authors identify two main categories of threats: external pressures, including the misuse of AI and metric-driven publishing models, and internal systemic weaknesses, such as the “publish or perish” culture and methodological fragility.

Mega-journals have improved accessibility and accelerated the dissemination of research, but their high publication volumes may weaken the rigor of the peer-review process.

To address these challenges, the editorial proposes a balanced approach that embraces innovation while safeguarding scientific integrity. Suggested solutions include greater transparency in the use of AI, the development of new research evaluation metrics that value quality, reproducibility, mentorship, and societal impact, and editorial policies that prioritize quality over quantity of publications.

Finally, the authors emphasize the importance of global cooperation to strengthen ethical standards and preserve the integrity of scientific research.
