Hip arthroscopy has become a widely adopted treatment for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, yet the factors influencing long-term functional outcomes remain incompletely understood. Identifying reliable prognostic indicators is essential for optimizing patient selection, setting realistic expectations, and refining surgical decision-making. In this study, we evaluated mid-term clinical outcomes following hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome and investigated the impact of demographic and intraoperative variables on postoperative function. Particular attention was given to the role of patient age and cartilage status, both of which have been widely debated as potential determinants of surgical success.
Our findings demonstrate significant and sustained improvements in patient-reported outcomes at a minimum follow-up of five years. While increasing age was associated with less favorable postoperative results and emerged as an independent predictor of functional outcome, intraoperative cartilage damage did not independently influence postoperative performance. By clarifying the relative importance of patient-related and joint-related factors, this study contributes to a more evidence-based approach to patient selection and preoperative counseling, highlighting age as a key consideration when predicting outcomes after hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome.
